One of the most dependable and durable alarm protection devices ever
invented was alarm window foil. That silver foil tape that you have
seen on so many windows in the past. This foil was applied to the
glass around the outer edge (sometimes the installer would impress us
by including patterns and designs) on the glass. That way, if the
window was broken, the foil would tear and open the burglar alarm
circuit to alert the police of a problem. It was applied to the glass
which was first cleaned with alcohol. A thin coat of varnish or clear
polyurethane was applied. The foil was stretched slightly and applied
to the glass. It was then smoothed down using a squeegee, (the old
timers used a match book cover). Once the varnish or polyurethane
dried, at least two top coats of varnish or polyurethane was applied
over the foil to prevent damage from the windows being washed. The
original alarm foil contained lead and was removed from the market.
