Foil will not stick on wet,
sweated or dirty windows. Windows must be tight in their frames.
-
Clean window using a clean lint free cloth and a
solvent such as alcohol or benzine. Store used cloths carefully.
-
Mark the windows on the outside of the glass using a
foil marker. A
foil template should be used as a guide to draw straight lines. The
guide line should, ideally, be 3’ from the edge of the frame.
-
Attach two self adhesive
foil blocks to the clean, preferably warm (60-70 degrees) surface of
the glass alongside of, but not touching the frame of the window where
the foil will come off the glass. Be sure the blocks are mounted on the
inside of the guide lines so the foil will line up properly.
-
It is best to work with the foil
above you. Therefore, hang the foil from a foil
holder above the window frame. A foil
holder is a reel made from two circles of lexan, placed on either
side of the foil will prevent the
foil from unraveling and make the process
extremely easier.
-
Apply
foil (adhesive side
down) in one continuous strip. Starting at the edge of the
foil block, start by
running the foil up the foil block ramp where the screw hole is, then
onto the window. End at the other foil block the same way. Hold the
foil securely against the glass with your thumb. Stretch a section
of foil using the
template line to achieve
a straight line. With a foil squeegee,
smooth the foil to the glass. Apply your alarm
warning decal.
-
Make a standard turn in the opposite direction and
then fold the foil over itself in the direction
that the foil is supposed to follow. A small dab
of foil protector should be placed on
the fold where the two layers of foil come
together. Avoid applying self adhesive foil on
cold windows. Avoid touching the back of the foil.
-
At no time should
the foil be permitted to
touch metal crossbars or frames holding the windows. These windows are
generally grounded. A short circuit to ground can make the alarm
inoperative. Most alarm grounds occur at poorly installed foil take off
points and crossover areas.
-
The most secure
method of crossing foil over a frame is stop at a
foil block and start at a
foil block. Use a small piece of wire to
connect one foil block screw to the other
-
After
foil is
applied, apply
two coats of foil
protector over the foil allowing the first coat to dry before
applying the second. Use a ½ inch camel hair
brush.
